REDBACK SPIDER MATRIARCH
Arachneus latrodecti tau — “Drasselith Tau, the Webmother”
Origin
Born from the fusion of venom and myth, the Redback Spider Matriarch represents the evolutionary zenith of Latrodectus tau. Outback legends claim she emerged when moonlight from a Blood Moon struck the venom of a dying redback beneath desert stone — a convergence of silk, spirit, and survival that birthed a predator of uncanny intelligence.
Physiology
- Upper body of a hardened, feral woman with sun‑toughened skin and a wiry, muscular frame
- Hair formed into thick, matted dreadlocks threaded with scattered silver‑grey web strands that glint under moonlight
- Eyes cold and predatory, glowing with a pale blue luminescence
- Lower body of a massive redback spider: glossy black abdomen with a vivid crimson hourglass marking
- Six long, slender, sharply angled legs, capable of silent, precise movement across stone, and a further two arm-like legs, capable of piercing the toughest carapace, often used to pin prey to the ground when hunting away from the web.
- Surrounding environment often coated in her silk: suspended cocoons, layered webs, and bone‑littered ground
Behaviour
- Solitary, territorial, and ritualistic in her movements
- Spins webs as both traps and memory‑lattices — each strand a record of prey, threat, or omen
- Prefers to capture prey in pairs, symbolizing her belief in duality and balance
- Communicates through low, rhythmic vibrations across her web network
- Exhibits eerie patience; she stalks intruders long before revealing herself
Habitat
Remote outback cave systems, sandstone ravines, and abandoned mine shafts. Her lairs are unmistakable: layered webs, suspended cocoons, and ancient cave drawings that seem to shift under moonlight.
Abilities
- Venom‑Silk Weave: Silk infused with paralytic toxins capable of numbing flesh on contact
- Web Sense: Detects vibrations across vast distances, perceiving movement like sound
- Moonshadow Blend: Under moonlight, her form merges with shadow and silk, nearly invisible
- Cocoon Stasis: Can preserve prey in a living, suspended state for weeks or months
Weaknesses
- Sunlight weakens her silk and reduces venom potency
- Fire disrupts her web resonance, causing disorientation
- Extended isolation can trigger a frenzy, leading to self‑entanglement
Cultural Lore
Some say that outback elders whisper Drasselith Tau is the desert’s retribution — a guardian of the forgotten and the lost. Her webs are said to hum with the voices of those who perished in the wastes. Others claim that if cave paintings shimmer under moonlight, the Webmother is awake… and she is never far away.
