What If Your City Turned Dark Fantasy?

My ‘Dark City’ Series of posts is almost at an end, and who knows, I may bring it back to life again another day. But for now, I bring you a dark fantasy portrayal of… Perth!

A dark fantasy depiction of Perth City. Glyphs are infused into the buildings, glowing bright, turning Perth into a Vegas-like city from some dark nightmare. A huge tentacled creature rises from the river beneath the light of the blood moon, and dark creatures hide in the shadows.

Perth City. Another place I have yet to visit. Even though I live in Australia, this city is approximately 5 hours flight from Brisbane, and I can get to a number of international destinations in less time than it takes me to get to Perth. However, I still plan to get there one day.

But to visit the Perth of this dark fantasy world it would do you well to ponder these questions:

When the Blood Moon rises over the Swan River, how much blood flows from the ancient runes lit by its glow?

What creatures stir in the mist that coils around King’s Park, and what secrets does it whisper about the forest’s oldest stones?

When the auroras twist crimson and green above the skyline, do they mark the return of the river god, or the opening of a portal to another realm?

What tribute must the fishermen offer at Elizabeth Quay to keep the tentacled behemoth beneath the waters from rising?

Which cathedral bells toll backwards at midnight, and what souls respond to their call?

The creature in the water looks oddly familiar to me… I wonder… could it be… is this the lake dweller from one of my own tales or is it just a coincidence?

Come back next week for the final image in my ‘dark city’ series.

What If Your City Turned Dark Fantasy?

Hello Readers,

Today brings another city submerged in the shadows of dark fantasy. This week I give you… Sydney.

Sydney City in a dark fantasy setting. Glyphs are scawled across the sails of the Opera House, The Harbour Bridge is lit by the glow of the blood moon, and shadow creatures lurk on the banks of the harbour.

Before you visit this fantasy metropolis, you may wish to consider these questions:

When the storm‑crowned moon rises above the harbour, which runes awaken upon the Opera House sails, and what forgotten chorus hums beneath their glow?

Which spirits drift through the flooded lanes of The Rocks, whispering the names of those who drowned before the city was built?

What creature coils within the depths of Darling Harbour, feeding on the dreams of those who gaze too long into its waters?

When the ferries vanish into mist, do they return from the same world they departed — or from one that remembers us differently?

What ancient order guards the tower that burns emerald above Circular Quay, and what price must be paid to silence its light?

Which cathedral spires hum with power when the blood‑red moon touches their tips, and what prayers are forbidden within their walls?

What shadowed parliament convenes in the clouds above the city, deciding which streets will wake and which will sleep forever?

Food for your thoughts… but don’t eat too much of it, or I fear you may get trapped among the shadows conjured within your mind.

What If Your City Turned Dark Fantasy?

Hello Readers,

Welcome back for the next post in my ‘Dark City’ series. This week’s city re-imagined in a dark fantasy setting is none other than… Adelaide!

A dark fantasy interpretation of Adelaide City. The town hall and city towers glow with sigils beneath a full moon. A serpentine beast writhes through the stormy night sky above the cathedral, and the eyes of mysterious creatures glow from the buildings and the river banks.

And here are a few questions for you to consider while you examine this dark interpretation of the city.

What creatures prowl the arcades of Rundle Mall after midnight, feeding on the flicker of neon and forgotten prayers?

Beneath the cathedral spires, what ancient covenant binds the clergy to the spirits that haunt the bells?

When the stormlight turns violet, do the runes on the Town Hall clock mark the hour of reckoning or the opening of a gate?

Which lanterns burn with souls instead of flame along North Terrace, and who dares to light them?

When dawn breaks over the hills, why does the light refuse to touch certain streets… what dark memories still linger there, half‑alive?

Ponder these questions while you enjoy this deliciously dark Adelaide cityscape.

Which city will fall into the darkness next? You’ll have to come back next week if you wish to find out.

Until then,

Happy reading!

What If Your City Turned Dark Fantasy?

Hello readers and welcome to the second post in my ‘Dark City’ series. In this series I’ve used Gen AI to reimagine what cities around the world would look like in a dark fantasy setting. The images generated, while not maintaining an entirely correct layout, have captured key landmarks and certainly tweak the imagination.

This week we are sticking with Australia. Here are some questions to tug at your thoughts… ‘During the Red Moon, the river swells and reaches into the streets of Kangaroo Point. Which landmarks are claimed by the tide? What damp, pale spirits are left behind when the waters finally recede? What ancient, entity slumbers in the silt beneath the Storey Bridge? What tribute must the ferrymen pay to cross its waters safely?’

Concept art of Brisbane, Australia in a dark fantasy world. The image shows the Storey Bridge with the city in the background. Strange beasts fly in the unnaturally coloured sky, and glowing sigils adorn the buildings.

Ponder these questions while you enjoy this murky Brisbane cityscape.

Which city will emerge from the shadows next time? Come back next week to find out.

Until then,

Hello readers and welcome to the first post in my ‘Dark City’ series. In this series I’ve used Gen AI to reimagine what cities around the world would look like in a dark fantasy setting. I thought it appropriate to start here in Australia. So let me ask you…

‘What if Melbourne’s laneways hid more than graffiti? What if something ancient still walked them? What sort of foul creature would it be? Where would it lurk?’

Ponder these questions while you enjoy this deliciously dark Melbourne cityscape.

A dark fantasy style concept of Melbourne city. The image incorporates Flinders street station, placed on the banks of the Yarra. Cityscape in the background with an unnaturally coloured sky, mystic sigils on buildings, and creatures lurking like gargoyles on rooftops.

Next week I’ll be bringing Brisbane into the gloom to sate your dark desires.

Until then,
